These large bronze pots are everywhere and were used to hold water for firefighting purposes.  Originally they were plated in gold but when China was generally weak in the Colonial period, the Western sailors scoured the gold off with their knives (which you cannot really see here in this photo).  Mao insisted that they not be re-plated as a reminder of what happens when you are a weak country...
