That is Tom standing next to the stub of a pillar.  Behind him is the other side of the main gallery of the Basilica and behind that would be the duplicate galleries that are in the previous pictures.  Apparently St. Peter's was designed to put the dome of the Pantheon ontop of this structure - combining the two greatest structures of antique Rome
